Greetings Beloved,
It’s been quite some time since I’ve written a new blog. I have been unbelievably busy. I sometimes think the guys that do this sort of stuff have way too much time on their hands. However, with the encouragement of many of you, I’m back! As I was seeking the Lord on what to blog, I have been lead by the Spirit of the Lord to begin a series of articles that tell the story of Linda and I being led to the mission field along with the course of life that has taken us to the point were we are now. The purpose of these series of stories are two fold. First, I pray that our life’s events along with the Word of the Lord, that He has given us will stir and encourage a new generation of Nation Changers! Secondly, I believe that as we archive these events, it will become the premise of my first book, “The Taking of A Nation”. Many of you who will be reading these blogs have been a major part of what has taken place in the Nation of Haiti, so please leave comments and if you remember a story that can be included, please email it to me. So with all that said, here goes….
THE CALL!
It all began about 25 years ago. I was sitting at my dining room table early one winter morning doing my daily devotion. I remember it was winter because our old Florida house didn’t have any heat and it was one of those day’s where we actually hit freezing here in Florida. The old olive green shag carpet would literally crunch under my feet. I was sitting by the oven on, and the door open with a blanket around me and over my head. I’m a true Floridian. I was reading from the book of Isaiah, and had came to chapter 6. This is the account of the year that King Uzziah had died, and Israel was beginning to panic. King Uzziah had taken Israel from an obscure people to a prosperous military might. Now their guy is dead, so the Prophet Isaiah began to seek God. Here in this account Isaiah was caught up in the Spirit and he literally saw, “the Lord high and Lifted Up”! What a majestic sight it must had been. Well at any rate, I had gotten to verse 8 where the Lord spoke to Isaiah, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” At that very moment, as my eyes moved through the passage, I heard a voice speak so loudly I jumped. So loudly I pulled the blanket from my head thinking that someone had walked in on me without my knowledge. No one there, but the words shaking my heart, “Whom shall I send and who will go for Us?”Suddenly I realized…God was speaking audibly to me. Oh my gosh, God is talking to me! Immediately I hit my knees and responded just as Isaiah, “Here am I! Send Me.” Later that day, I recalled the unbelievable event to Linda. to my surprise, she said that the Lord had been dealing with her as well. That we would give our hearts and lives to where ever God would send us. Thus began the adventure of faith.
Not knowing anything about missions or where in the world we would ever go, the Lord seemed to put us through three years of “boot camp” experiences of short term missions. We immediately were hooked up to a missionary evangelist through our local church. Cloyde Yoder who is now in glory, gave us our first chance on the mission field. In 6 months we were on the field in Costa Rica (nice!) . I was participating in my first crusade. This in itself is a story. Not knowing this man well, I arrived and he had me participate in setting up his crusade tent. It wasn’t terribly large, maybe sat about 500 souls. Of course I had no tent experience, and he left me with two Costa Ricans who spoke no English to set up this tent. It took us a day. I was exhausted. He returned around 4:00 Pm, walked around and began to inspect the finished job. He showed me where to tighten ropes and where I had made mistakes. I was eager to learn until…..He looked at me and said, “now take it down and roll it up, we’ll set up tomorrow at the sight.” Oh Lord I was mad. I didn’t say a word but obeyed the man of God. The next day we went to the crusade site. Once again he left me with my two new Costa Rica brothers and said set it up. Again all day, setting up the tent. For those of you who have known me, I’m not too keen o physical labor, but the tent got set up. Again, at 4:00 PM he returned. Again, he showed me where I could had done a better job. I was getting my “Tent Set Up class 101″ on my very first trip. I was exhausted and sweaty and he turned, smiled and said, “now you can preach on my platform”. You see it dawned on me….the man of God was watching to see if I’d serve. Only a true heart of a servant can be used by God. To my young minister candidates that might one day read this, If you want to be great in the Kingdom, you have to become a servant to all.(see Mt. 20/26)
I preached my first message ever. I can remember it to this day. “Seek 1st the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Mt. 6/33.
This became our first experience of going to the nations. We continued leading teams to Costa Rica and Guatemala. We even began to learn Spanish. Little did we know that one day soon we’d take a strong turn and head a totally different direction. God knew, and all we were doing was endeavoring to follow Him.
